The Common Threads are a regional fibre arts guild. Some area quilters felt they wanted a place to express their art in less traditional ways and so The Common Threads group was formed.
The group is a loose organization of artists, ranging from quilters to painters and sculptors. The group has a minimum of one challenge event per year in which participants buy a package containing material and possibly additional items as well as a theme. Using the materials given, with the freedom to add anything the artist chooses, work is created that reflects the current theme.
The work of the artists is then exhibited in April or May, beginning at Beneath the Oaks Gallery in Thornhill, Manitoba. From there the annual exhibition has travelled to other participating communities.
Occasionally the group will also do a mini-challenge in which participants are given a quickly executed theme taking no more than a month to complete.
